Part of a public television series on the world's
disappearing languages, An Teanga is a documentary about
Irish Gaelic, one of the world’s oldest spoken languages.
Spoken by millions of Irish as recently as one hundred years ago,
through a combination of emigration, famine and political suppression,
Irish is today spoken regularly by less than 40,000 individuals.
But in recent years, the language has made a comeback, embraced
by Ireland’s young, highly-educated and increasingly urban
population. As Ireland and its “Celtic Tiger” economy
assume a leading role in the European Union, this film will examine
the corresponding role that an ancient language can play in the
culture and self-image of an evolving nation. An Teanga is
being produced for national public television broadcast by Holly
and Chris Million and is written and directed by Chris Million.
